Streams start with water flowing across land. Water goes to areas where it can flow easily. Gravity makes water flow to the lowest point. As the water concentrates in one area, it causes soil and rock to be washed away. This creates a channel. The steeper the slope, the faster the water will go, causing more soil and rock to be washed away. This is called erosion and makes the channel bigger.
